History

The University of Michigan (UM) was founded in 1817 in Detroit, Michigan, as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, by the governor and judges of the Michigan Territory. It was the first public university established in the Northwest Territory and one of the first universities in the United States to offer a comprehensive education in a wide range of disciplines. In 1837, the university was moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was reorganized as the University of Michigan.

In its early years, UM was a small school with a faculty of six and a student body of approximately 100.
