History

The Australian National University (ANU) was established in 1946 in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. The idea for a national university had been proposed since 1900, but it wasn't until the 1940s that it became a reality. The university was built on land at the foot of Black Mountain, which had been set aside in the city designs by Walter Burley Griffin.

ANU was established with the aim of becoming a world-class research university, and it attracted some of Australia's most prominent scholars as its first faculty members, including Sir Howard Florey, Sir Mark Oliphant, Sir Keith Hancock, and Sir Raymond Firth. Sir Douglas Copland was appointed as the university's first Vice-Chancellor and former Prime Minister Stanley Bruce served as the first Chancellor. ANU was originally organized into four research schools, with additional faculties added in later years.

ANU has a history of student activism and has been at the forefront of several social and political movements. In recent years, the university has been particularly notable for its fossil fuel divestment campaign, which has been one of the most successful in the country. In 2014, ANU divested from two major fossil fuel companies, a decision that was criticized by some government ministers but defended by Vice Chancellor Ian Young.

The university has faced challenges as well, including funding and staff cuts in some departments. In 2017, ANU faced a major cybersecurity breach when Chinese hackers infiltrated its computer systems. Additionally, a survey conducted in 2017 by the Australian Human Rights Commission found that ANU had the second-highest incidence of sexual assault and harassment among Australian universities.

At the undergraduate level, ANU offers Bachelor's degrees in various fields such as Arts, Science, Law, Business, Engineering, and Information Technology. Students can also choose to study a double degree, combining two areas of study such as Science/Law, Engineering/Commerce, or Arts/Science. ANU also offers an Honours program in many of these disciplines, allowing students to undertake advanced study and research in their chosen field.

ANU's research degrees include Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. These degrees are designed for students who wish to undertake advanced research in a particular field. ANU has a strong reputation for research excellence, with research strengths in areas such as Astronomy and Astrophysics, Environmental Sciences, International Relations, and Law.

ANU also offers a range of professional development programs, short courses, and online courses. These courses are designed for individuals who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge in a particular area or who wish to upskill or retrain for a new career.
