History

Seoul National University (SNU) is a prestigious national university in South Korea. Its history can be traced back to 1946, just after the end of Japanese colonial rule in Korea. At the time, the country was still in a state of political and social upheaval. The establishment of SNU was seen as a critical step towards modernizing the nation and promoting democracy.

Originally, the university's main campus was located in Dongsung-dong, Jongno District. However, due to political pressure from President Park Chung-hee, who was concerned about student protests at the site of the Gwanak golf club, a new main campus was built in Gwanak District in February 1975. Between 1975 and 1979, most colleges of the university relocated to the new Gwanak Campus.

Despite the challenges posed by political instability and financial difficulties in the early years, SNU has become one of the leading universities in the world. The university has made significant contributions to the development of the country, and its graduates have gone on to become leaders in various fields, including politics, business, and academia.

In recent years, SNU has faced new challenges, including proposals to relocate the university to the newly established special autonomous Sejong City. While the university has considered withdrawing from this plan, it remains committed to its mission of promoting academic excellence, advancing research, and contributing to the betterment of society.
