History

Peking University (PKU), also known as Beijing University, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. It was founded in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking, making it the first national university in China.

The founding of Peking University was the result of the Hundred Days' Reform movement led by Emperor Guangxu in 1898, which aimed to modernize the country's educational system. The university was originally located in the former residence of a prince, but it quickly outgrew its original location and moved to its current site in the northwest suburbs of Beijing in 1919.

In the early years, Peking University focused mainly on the humanities and social sciences, but it soon expanded its curriculum to include science and engineering. It played a significant role in the May Fourth Movement of 1919, a student-led protest against China's weak response to the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Peking University became a centre for intellectual and cultural activities in China. Many of the country's most prominent intellectuals and scholars taught or studied at the university during this time.

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Peking University was reorganized and renamed several times, reflecting the changing priorities of the government. It was briefly known as Yanjing University, and then as Beijing University before finally being renamed Peking University in 1982.

Today, Peking University is a leading institution of higher learning in China, with a strong reputation in both the humanities and sciences. It has produced numerous notable alumni, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Nobel laureate in physics Yang Chen-ning, and renowned writer Lu Xun.

Peking University has also developed strong partnerships with universities around the world and has established several research centres and institutes focused on international studies, global health, and other areas of global significance. It continues to play a critical role in China's intellectual and cultural landscape and is widely regarded as one of the country's most important institutions of higher education.
