In 1870, the first telegraph service was started in Tokyo and Yokohama, laying the groundwork for all future NTT endeavors. In 1890, the first telephone service was started in Tokyo and Yokohama, creating the infrastructure for future communications technology in Japan. The Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation was then established in 1952. At the World Exhibition of 1970, NTT teased the future of communication with a video-telephone connecting Osaka with Tokyo, as well as a wireless telephone. The company was taken private in 1985, setting the stage for a brand that has since constantly pushed innovation towards the forefront. 1988 saw the creation of NTT DATA to create new value for clients and society by leveraging information technology. In 1991, the company launched NTT DOCOMO, INC launched, establishing itself as a leader of mobile network operations. In 1999, NTT developed the world’s first cell phone IP connection service, "i-mode", which led to the creation of Emoji, revolutionising communication for years to come. NTT launched its first cloud-based service in 2008, and acquired Dimension Data (now NTT Ltd.) in 2010 to boost its presence in Africa, South America, and the Middle East. It announced its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2016. In December 2019, NTT joined “The Valuable 500,” an international initiative to promote the participation in the business of people with disabilities. That same year, it launched NTT Ltd, integrating NTT Brands worldwide including Dimension Data, NTT Security, and NTT Communications (outside Japan). Employing 40,000 people over 70 countries, NTT Ltd. provides world-leading global technology and managed services.
