History

Marriott International's history dates back to 1927 when it was founded by J. Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice S. Marriott. It started as a nine-stool root beer stands in Washington D.C. Over the next two decades, Marriott expanded into the airline catering business, opening new restaurants and motorway hotels along the way.

In the 1950s and 60s, Marriott began its journey into the hotel industry, opening its first hotel in Arlington, Virginia, which was known as the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel. In the 1970s, Marriott went international, opening its first hotel outside the United States in Acapulco, Mexico. The company continued to grow, building new hotels and acquiring existing ones. In 1987, Marriott acquired a 49% interest in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, and in 1995, it acquired the remaining interest in the company.

Throughout the 1990s, Marriott continued to expand its brand, acquiring hotel chains such as Courtyard by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott, and Fairfield Inn & Suites. In 2002, Marriott International became the first lodging company to offer online booking, a move that transformed the industry. Marriott continued to innovate, introducing new brands and amenities to meet the evolving needs of its customers.

In 2016, Marriott International completed its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, making it the largest hotel company in the world. Today, Marriott International operates over 30 hotel brands, including Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, W Hotels, Westin, Courtyard, and Sheraton, and has more than 6,900 properties in 131 countries. With a focus on innovation and customer service, Marriott International continues to be a leader in the hospitality industry.
