Summary

EY Japan, part of the global Ernst & Young network, comprises several member firms operating independently with no capital ties. The core companies include EY Japan G.K., responsible for coordination with member firms, and EY Japan K.K., providing essential back-office services like IT, human resources, accounting, legal affairs, and compliance operations for each member firm.

The company offers a wide range of services through its member firms, including Assurance, handled by EY New Japan LLC, which serves as the Japan audit firm. The Consulting & Advisory division provides consulting services and financial advisory services through entities like EY Strategy & Consulting K.K., formed by integrating two group companies. Additionally, EY Tax Corporation specializes in Japan Tax Services.

Among the other member firms, EY Law focuses on providing legal services, while New Japan Public Affairs advises the public sector, including national and local governments, on financial, accounting, administrative management, and e-government relations.

While EY Japan has seen significant growth and diversification, it has also seen the disbandment of certain entities, such as the EY Research Institute, a think tank, which ceased its operations in 2017.

History

Prior to 2017, the Japan area functioned as a single entity within EY's global structure. However, in January 2017, a significant transformation took place as EY Japan K.K. was established as a corporation responsible for overseeing EY member firms in Japan.

With the establishment of EY Japan K.K., the management function previously handled by the New Japan audit firm was separated, allowing for greater focus and efficiency. The move aimed to enhance cooperation among member firms and expedite strategy execution, further solidifying the EY brand's presence in Japan.

In line with the industry trend to reorganise management functions, EY Japan K.K. took on the responsibility of back-office operations for EY Japan's member firms. These operations encompass IT, general affairs, human resources, accounting, risk management, legal affairs, public relations, branding, and procurement. Previously, each member firm independently hired back-office employees for non-IT services, and EY Business Initiative Co., Ltd. managed IT operations solely for IT services. However, EY Japan's organizational reform led to the consolidation of all back-office operations, including IT, under EY Japan K.K.

In 2018, a pivotal step was taken to bring all back-office employees from member firms under the umbrella of EY Japan K.K., further aligning the organisation to provide services to clients more effectively. Simultaneously, EY Business Initiative K.K. was renamed EY Japan, representing the consolidation of back-office operations and emphasizing the unified approach to service delivery.
