History

The Stern School of Business of New York University was established in 1900 as the School of Commerce, Finance and Accounting and was initially offering training to students for careers in commerce in the financial markets of New York City.  Today, the business school is one of the premier management education schools and research centres and is located in Greenwich Village and Westchester. NYU Stern believes in the potential of individuals to solve global problems through the power of business.  They have a vision to develop and create people and ideas that transform 21st century problems and opportunities and to create value for business and society and the same time.  The business school’s motto, “An Education in Possible”, is their promise to deliver a unique education that combines intense classroom environments with engagement outside of the classroom to broaden perspectives of students and change their global mindsets. The business school promotes disruptive thinking and experimentation to create values.  Stern School of Business lives by the core values of academic excellence, collaboration and the energy of a global hub.  They also state that their education is fueled by a community of exceptional individuals who possess both intellectual and interpersonal strengths that help to change ideas into actions and inspire others to do the same. NYU Stern has three Nobel Prize winners who currently teach at the school and an average enrollment of approximately 5,000 students per year.  They have a total of 346 faculty members and ranked number sixth in the world for research productivity.  The Social Sciences Research Network ranks number one among the top 500 US business schools and they have an alumni network of over 100,000 members from more than 100 different countries.


Courses

The MBA Programme is offered in a full-time format as well as a part-time format in either Manhattan or Westchester. The Full-time MBA Programme has a flexible core curriculum, three different specialisations with 20 different options and a leadership development initiative.  Students participate in a nine-month fellowship as a non-voting board member of a NYC non-profit organisations, tackle real business challenges of non-profits, for-profits and faculty-sourced projects and make investment decisions for the Michael Price Student Investment Fund. The programme begins with LAUNCH, a two-week programme that has the intention to inspire students to face major global challenges, such as climate change, fiscal crises or global energy and urbanization.  In the first year, classes are divided into groups of 60 to 70 students and fundamental topics of business are covered in the areas of finance, accounting, statistics, firms and markets, the global economy, leadership in organisations, marketing, operations management and strategy.  Students then participate in a summer internship to gain industry experience and create vital network connections.  During the second year, students can take electives during the day, take a quarter of the courses at other NYU graduate schools, or participate in an exchange programme.  Students also choose a specialization and take a professional responsibility course that teaches students how to conduct themselves in the most professional and honorable way in a business environment. The Part-time Programme in Manhattan and Westchester has a curriculum that allows students to go at their own pace and finish the programme in two to six years.  They can also change their academic pace from semester to semester and go to classes on either weeknights or weekends.  Students must complete the programme at the location they begin at the first year, but may choose to switch locations before beginning their second year. The Executive MBA Programme is designed to provide the education needed for executives to drive their career to the next level and develop an intellectual breadth of management techniques in all functions, as well as a strategic perspectives and analytical skills to solve complex business problems.  The programme has a strong global focus and a rigorous management curriculum that lets participants gain a set of fresh business frameworks and management skills that can be applied to their organisations. The programme is 22 months long and requires a minimum of 60 credits for completion.  Students take required courses during the first year and ten electives during the second year.  A variety of specialisations are offered in the areas of:

One unique part of the programme is the global study courses, which are one-week international residencies that allow students to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of emerging markets of countries in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The Executive Education Programmes are offered in short courses and customisable programmes.  The short course programmes are designed to have an immediate positive impact on the performance of employees and provide relevant tools and strategies that can be applied to their organisation.  The custom programmes are collaboratively designed to address the organisation’s current challenges and enhance their employees’ effectiveness. Both programmes aim to minimize the time spent away from the office.
