The Fuqua School of Business is the business school of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

History

The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University of one of the leading business schools in the world and has established themselves as having a world-renowned faculty and research centres.  The business school enrolls more than 1,300 students per year and was the first global business school in the nation.  In 2008, they global expanded by launching an initiative that established campus locations in London, Dubai, Shanghai and Kunshan, St. Petersburg and New Delhi. The Fuqua School of Business has a mission to being dedicated to advancing the understanding of management through research, putting research knowledge at the service of business and society, and providing the highest quality education for business and non-profit leaders globally.  The business school also strives to maintain complete excellence in management education, research and the advancement of management practices with an end goal to produce leaders of consequence. Fuqua is also committed to promoting diversity within their community.  They constantly work towards building and sustaining an environment that fosters the capitalization of diversity with the community as a source of intellectual, personal and professional growth and innovation in the area of business.


Courses

Fuqua offers the MBA Programme in four different formats:  Daytime, cross-continent, global executive and weekend executive. The Daytime MBA Programme starts in August and is 22 months long.  The programme is cohort-based and has a general management focus, also offering 11 different concentrations and five joint degree options.  The first year, students attend a three-day orientation followed by a Global Institute course in the summer that emphasizes leadership in a global society and provides students with a broad perspective on leading and managing in a global environment.  During the beginning of the second year, students attend a re-orientation followed by a consequential leadership course that builds on the skills mastered in the Global Institute course during the first year.  The remainder of the second year is devoted to electives.  To the right is a diagram of the first year schedule, provided by Fuqua.

The Cross-Continent MBA Programme is an international programme designed for working professionals around the globe ready to progress in their careers. The programme starts in July and is 16 months long. It combines residencies and distance learning and is cohort-based. The programme also contains a general management focus and offers five different concentrations and one certificate option. The curriculum is divided into six terms that include 16 courses. Ten are core courses that cover the basic functional areas of business, four are electives and two are multi-term courses that develop global business skills and competence. Their are two residencies in Durham at Fuqua, and one residency a-piece at Shanghai/Kunshan, China; Dubai, UAE; New Dehli, India; and St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Global Executive MBA Programme is an international programme tailored towards the senior executive. The programme starts in February and is 15 months long. The programme has the same residency structure as the Cross-continent MBA and includes eight core courses and three multi-term courses in the areas of culture, civilization and leadership, global markets and institutions and leadership for global executives. The Weekend Executive MBA is designed for the mid-to-senior level executive, starts in May and is 19 months long. The programme contains residencies in Durham combined with distance learning and is delivered through cohort-based modules. The goal of the programme is a strengthen core business schools and engage faculty and students to create and share new ideas. The programme starts with a one-week orientation, followed by classes held on alternating weekends on Fridays and Saturdays. The final term is held on campus for two weeks and the remainder of the term is completed online. The programme also contains concentration options in Energy and Environment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Marketing, Finance and Strategy. Duke Fuqua also offers Executive Education Programmes in the areas of Advanced Management, Leadership, Global Leadership and Managing the Unexpected. The Leadership Programme is ideal for anyone with leadership responsibilities, ranging from high-level executives to managers. The programme offers a comprehensive approach to leadership that is drawn from research in the fields of organisational behaviour, sociology, psychology and political science. The course also contains a 360 degree assessment that gives students insight on their strengths and weaknesses and allows them to create a personal leadership development plan.
