Cybersecurity: Top Big Company Email Breaches
Apple, Barclays, Deliveroo, IBM, and HSBC among companies which have had their support/info email addresses breached
A “breach” is an incident where data has been unintentionally exposed to the public. Email accounts which these companies use to communicate with their clients were analysed as breaches affecting these expose sensitive customer data to hackers.
Deliveroo – BREACHED
The email@example.com email address has been breached four times since 2017. In August 2017, July 2018, October 2019, and March 2019. The last attack, a spam operation known under the name “Intelimost” exposed over 3 million Deliveroo users’ unique email addresses and their passwords. These were exposed by sending emails which appeared to be coming from people the recipients knew.
Revolut – NOT BREACHED
The financial technology company and neobank was founded four years ago but has grown to service more than 10 million users in 2019. Users who have used the firstname.lastname@example.org email address to voice their concerns about various issues will be pleased to know that no breaches have been recorded and their information has not been compromised.
Elvie – BREACHED
Femtech hardware developer Elvie was founded six years ago with the objective of providing women with better smart technology. Some of their most successful products are a smart pelvic floor exerciser and a silent wearable breast pump. The company has just secured its third round of investment, worth $42 million. Breaches in March and October of 2019 were recorded on an email address which customers could use to ask questions related to the company and its products. Questions@elvie.com was compromised and record of personal data such as email addresses, geographic locations, names, phone numbers, as well as social media profiles were leaked.
IBM – BREACHED
The International Business Machines Corporation is a U.S. multinational technology company, and one of the most easily recognisable brands in the world. The company’s support email (email@example.com) has been breached on ten separate occasions from 2015 to the present day, potentially exposing sensitive customer data.
Apple – BREACHED
According to Forbes, Apple is the world’s most valuable brand with an estimated brand value of $205.5 billion. The email address which Apple users are told to contact with security queries and issues (firstname.lastname@example.org) has itself been compromised three times since 2015 (in May 2015, August 2017, and March 2019).
Social Chain – NOT BREACHED
Founded in 2014, the Social Chain Ltd is the first integrated social media company in the world, combining social media and social commerce through proprietary tech platform links. Users who have emailed email@example.com will be happy to know that the company’s contact email address has never been compromised.
John Lewis – BREACHED
John Lewis and Partners is a brand that anyone in the UK will instantly recognise. The high-end department store chain operates throughout Great Britain and those who have used the firstname.lastname@example.org for any sort of queries could have had sensitive data exposed. The customer service email address was breached in May 2015, January 2017, August 2017, February and March of 2019.
Barclays – BREACHED
One of the top five largest banks in the UK, Barclays has had its customer service email (email@example.com) breached three times between 2017 and 2019 (August 2017, October 2019, and February 2019). Many pieces of potentially sensitive information were let out in the open by the breaches, including dates of birth, email addresses, IP addresses, geographical locations, names, or phone numbers.
HSBC – BREACHED
Another one of the UK’s top five banks, HSBC, has been targeted by hackers even more times. The firstname.lastname@example.org email address, which anyone can use to ask for information about the bank was breached no fewer than six times since 2015 (March 2015, August 2017, September 2018, and February, March, October 2019). Email addresses, employers, job titles, geographic locations, as well as names, social media profiles, and phone numbers were exposed.
Goldman Sachs – NOT BREACHED
However, not all big banks seem to have data breach issues. Goldman Sachs, one of America’s largest investment banks and financial services companies, has never had either of its support email addresses (email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org) breached over the past 5 years.
